TAMAR PACT

5 FEBRUARY 3152

By the time Bel got into the stairwell, Peat and Atwater had already reached the first landing; it was dark, still smoky, and two of the LEDs were flickering. Both Atwater and Peat fired, Atwater two aimed shots from his sidearm, and Peat a three-round burst from the confiscated Gunther MP-20. The reports were shockingly loud in the confined space. Bel yelped and tried to pop her ears, opening and closing her mouth, trying to swallow. The ringing was different from the restaurant bomb blast: higher pitched, and almost echoing.

“Do not stop!” Curtain shouted. The big man crouched by one of the bodies and came up with a shotgun and a bandolier of shells. “They may rally if we delay.”

“You heard the man, Private,” Peat said to Atwater. He glanced at Bel. “Ma’am, get these peoples’ weapons and follow, okay? We may need the ammunition.”

“Go,” Bel said. She crouched by one of the bodies, a woman who’d been shredded by shrapnel from the grenade. She’d carried a rifle Bel didn’t recognize, but the barrel was bent. Bel tapped around her jacket, looking for a sidearm or a magazine.

Sergeant Perathoner knelt across the body from her, searching that side. After a moment she muttered “Oh, goddess,” twisted aside, and threw up on the floor. She recovered in a few seconds, wiping her mouth and going right back to her search. “Sorry, ma’am.”

“I’m not far behind you,” Bel said. She found two small, five-round or so magazines filled with long, thin rifle cartridges. She slid them into her jacket pocket, then stood. “Ready?”

Across the landing, Sergeant Carillo straightened, holding another shotgun. “No extra rounds, ma’am, but ready.”

Staff Sergeant Gleason and Andy Ishikawa both just nodded. “Better go before my brain catches up with what we’re doing,” Andy said. Bel grinned at her and turned to follow the three skirmishers down.

Two landings down, there was another burst of fire.

And a yelp of pain.
